6 years ago, Jonathan and Derrick (JD) met at Grambling State University. Like most black gay men, they have battled societal normality that led to self-hate, fear, spiritual confrontation, and familial tensions. JD is a testament that relationships require hard work, and love does truly win! From preaching to combatting racism; from graduate school and now law school: the two have been together through it all, showing the world that love is growth and sacrifice.

One Love.

It was over two years in the making and over three months in planning, but at last the engagement day finally came and Joshua accept Antwain’s proposal by saying YES!

Congratulations to both of you and can’t wait to witness your wedding next year.

Thank you to both of for having confidence in me filming your special day, it meant a lot.

Noah Mitchell explores the intersections of being Black, Gay, & Christian in the Black church. There is much work to be done to go from welcoming to affirming but this work could be the difference between life or death. I currently work as the Director of Strategic Partnerships & Student Experience at Per Scholas Columbus. Per Scholas provides work force training for underserved communities preparing them to gain jobs with a higher livable wage. I have a masters degree in Higher Ed, and I am in the last semester of Seminary, where I will obtain a Mdiv with a specialization in the Black Church & African Diaspora. I am an author, public speaker, and advocate for marginalized groups. My specific resource in seminary has been focused on the LGBTQ+ community in the Black Church, and the issues of oppression found within. The Love Center, a Bay Area Pentecostal Black church, adopted their community’s countercultural mentality ushering in a new era in Christianity, becoming a haven for gay and lesbian singers who felt alienated from the church they grew up in. But what had been repressed would find a novel way to be expressed in sacred church vocals fused with secular club rhythms to form disco’s gay anthems.
