Confronting this country’s history of racism, and reckoning with its manifestation in the present is, in itself, a daunting task. Black LGBTQ individuals have to carry the burden and work of navigating a racist society, and also contend with transphobic and homophobic violence. This societal syndemic shows up in all facets of life, and even within the LGBTQ community itself.

While we are seeing uprisings, and revolutionary push back against a system of oppression that is integral to how this country operates. Black LGBTQ citizens are pushing to broaden the dialogue to explicitly include their narratives and voices.

President Trump's controversial rollback of transgender school bathroom protections coincides with the star-studded ABC miniseries and transgender champions fighting to restore dignity.

The series revolves around the fun adventures of 6 animal friends – Alex (the bear), John (the elephant), Ruby (the cat), Charlie (the mischievous monkey), Lily (the rabbit) and Toby (the dog). They love to play pranks on one another but also are there to help when one of them is in trouble. A silent comedy, the series is a laugh riot that can be enjoyed by all ages.

And the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey reported that Black transgender women were incarcerated approximately at a rate ten times that of the general population. She knows these issues on a personal level – and that’s why she’s fighting for her community.

Noah Mitchell explores the intersections of being Black, Gay, & Christian in the Black church. There is much work to be done to go from welcoming to affirming but this work could be the difference between life or death. I currently work as the Director of Strategic Partnerships & Student Experience at Per Scholas Columbus. Per Scholas provides work force training for underserved communities preparing them to gain jobs with a higher livable wage. I have a masters degree in Higher Ed, and I am in the last semester of Seminary, where I will obtain a Mdiv with a specialization in the Black Church & African Diaspora. I am an author, public speaker, and advocate for marginalized groups. My specific resource in seminary has been focused on the LGBTQ+ community in the Black Church, and the issues of oppression found within. I have spent over a decade working in churches from various settings. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Saturday, LGBTQ activists gathered at St. Pete’s North Straub Park to stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Protesters told 10 Tampa Bay it’s important to use PRIDE as an opportunity to show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

"Pride was started by a transgender woman of color," organizer Eleni Sullivan explained.

While studying abroad in Japan, Micah Peterson found himself being repeatedly stereotyped because of his race. While this was an unpleasant experience, Micah managed to turn it into a positive and returned home with a deeper sense of pride in both his Blackness and his Queerness.
